A Hook Can Do That?!

Have you heard of this technique called knooking? I hadn’t until I stumbled upon it a few days ago. It’s knitting with a crochet hook.

Here’s what photojenic, who started
this website & Ravelry group, tell you more about it…

So what IS knooking? In a nutshell, it’s making actual knit stitches using a specialized crochet hook. Nope, it’s not Tunisian, slip stitch, crochetnit, double crochet, or any other knit-look-alike stitch. It’s actual knit and purl stitches. Knitting with a hook = Knooking. :)

The technique and hook itself appears to have originated in Japan under the name Japanese Super Miracle Needle. See Sohon Se on this blog, and also referenced by Crochet with Dee. Right now the only source seems to be Tezukuritown, but I haven’t had any success contacting them.

The reason why I’m SO interested in this new technique is because I’ve been racking my own brain trying to figure out how to knit with just one hook. I like the drape of a knitted fabric, but I don’t care for using the knitting needles to make it.

I have been just itching to try this since I found out about it. My only stumbling block is actually having a hook I can use! I have tried to use a hook with some cord and a blunt needle – using the needle to move the cord up each row. Unfortunately, that didn’t work very well. So I’m on the hunt for a good knooking hook.

Been thinking about buying one off the net instead, but it would take too long to get here for my liking. lol Mind you, it would be faster than waiting to get into town to check out the stores there to see if they have it. So far I haven’t had a chance to get to checking around. I would really like to get my hands on a Locker Hook, though I might break down at some point and invest in the Denis Interchangeable Crochet Hooks set…

Either way, I’m going to eventually get a hook to use & start to learn this new technique… Though don’t get me wrong! Crochet will ALWAYS be my first love and will never EVER turn my back on it. *grin*

Thanks for your comments Sandee :) Unfortunately there is no interchangeable hooks that are specific for knooking. However, if you visit http://www.knitdenise.com you can purchase (or one of your LYS or online stores) individual hooks that you can use with cord or string within the end holes. This works great for knooking & much easier than trying to find a locker hook which is what most have been using for knooking.
